Lately, I’ve been watching the “Horseplay” classes for kids 8 to 12 years old. The youngsters learn how to be with horses. How to work with one another.

My friend Mandy, who’s OK even though she’s a Morgan and not a Mustang, leads the classes. With style.

Give the young folk time and space and they’ll cheerfully decide who leads first, who rides first.

True, they’re not as eager to muck the arena afterwards, but they understand that being with horses carries responsibilities, too.
